The median published Australian SMS rate is 5.66c a message at 15,000 messages a month, across 20 providers that bill in Australian dollars. It falls from 6.90c at 1,000 a month to 5.00c at 250,000.

Lowest at 15,000 a month: Mobile Message, SMSFlow and Texto. The count falls with volume because a provider whose published ladder stops short of a volume is not counted there, never counted at zero.
Entry rates, replies, numbers and the sender ID register
- Entry rate. On the smallest purchase each provider publishes, the median price is 6.95c a message, from 3.00c to 16.00c, across 20 providers.
- Replies. Of the 12 providers whose pages state what an inbound message costs, 10 make replies free (83%), 1 charges for them and 1 includes them in a monthly allowance.
- Dedicated number. 25 of the 40 Australian providers we compare publish what a dedicated reply number costs. Where that converts to a monthly fee (16 providers, excluding GST, a yearly lease divided by 12, setup fees left out), the median is $17.41 a month, 3 include one at no monthly fee, and the highest is $79.00.
- Sender ID register. 17 of 20 priced providers (85%) appear under their own name on ACMA's list of providers taking part in the SMS Sender ID Register; the rest may register sender IDs through a listed partner.

How the index is built
- Who is counted. Providers that trade under the name we review, have an Australian entity (tier 1 or 2 on our presence scale) and publish a per-message rate in Australian dollars that maps onto a monthly volume: 20 of the 47 trading brands we review. Providers billing in US dollars are left out, so no exchange rate moves the index.
- Which rate. The rate a sender at each volume reaches on the provider's own published ladder, read from its pricing page, with GST as the provider states it.
- The statistics. The median and quartiles use linear interpolation between ranks (the method spreadsheets call QUARTILE.INC), so an even count's median is the mean of the middle two.
- When. Rebuilt with the site whenever a rate is re-read. Every input was last read on or before 23 October 2026, the one date this page states.
